The Borromini Hall Private Tour

A Hidden Library in the Heart of Rome

Explore the monumental Salone Borromini of the Biblioteca Vallicelliana, one of Rome’s most elegant and least visited historic libraries.

Just a few steps from Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori lies a place that most visitors never discover: a spectacular seventeenth-century library hall designed by Francesco Borromini, one of the greatest architects of the Roman Baroque.

Still part of a working research institution, the Borromini Hall offers a rare opportunity to experience a side of Rome dedicated not to spectacle, but to knowledge, scholarship and architectural refinement.

01 Knowledge & History

The Biblioteca Vallicelliana

Founded in the sixteenth century by Saint Philip Neri and the Congregation of the Oratory, the Biblioteca Vallicelliana preserves thousands of manuscripts, rare books and historical documents collected over centuries.

Although scholars from around the world continue to use its collections, the library remains largely unknown to the majority of visitors to Rome.

Its greatest architectural treasure is the magnificent Salone Borromini, one of the most beautiful library interiors in the city.

02 Francesco Borromini

Borromini’s Intellectual Masterpiece

The Salone was designed by Francesco Borromini during the seventeenth century and reflects many of the characteristics that made him one of the most innovative architects of the Baroque age.

Elegant proportions, rhythmic arches, carefully controlled light and an extraordinary sense of spatial harmony transform what could have been a simple reading room into a work of art.

Unlike the theatrical churches and grand piazzas for which Borromini is famous, the library demonstrates his ability to create beauty within an intimate intellectual setting.

His wider architectural world can be explored through our Baroque Rome Private Tour .

03 A Living Institution

A Working Historic Library

What makes this experience especially fascinating is that the library is not a museum.

Researchers, historians and scholars continue to use the institution today, creating an atmosphere very different from that of Rome’s major monuments.

Visitors enter a place where centuries of knowledge remain alive and accessible, surrounded by original shelves, historic volumes and architectural details that have changed little since the Baroque period.

04 Hidden Rome

Hidden Rome at Its Best

The Borromini Hall perfectly represents a different side of Rome.

There are no monumental crowds and no conventional visitor circuit. Instead, guests discover a quiet masterpiece hidden behind the streets of the historic centre.

For architecture lovers, historians and repeat visitors seeking something beyond the standard itinerary, it offers one of the most rewarding hidden experiences in the city.

This approach is central to our Secret Rome & Hidden Gems collection.
