The Sovereign Order of Malta
The origins of the Order of Malta lie in Jerusalem, where a religious community developed around a hospital serving pilgrims to the Holy Land.
Over the centuries, the Order’s history became connected with Jerusalem, Rhodes, Malta and eventually Rome.
Unlike many historic chivalric institutions, the Sovereign Order of Malta remains active today, carrying out medical and humanitarian activities internationally while maintaining its own diplomatic relationships.
Its Roman presence is therefore not simply historical: the institutions encountered on the Aventine remain part of a living organisation.
The Knights of Malta on the Aventine Hill
The Aventine offers a very different atmosphere from central Rome.
Quiet streets, ancient churches, gardens and historic residences create an ideal setting for exploring the relationship between religion, architecture and institutional power.
Rather than following a standard monument-to-monument itinerary, the experience connects the history of the Order of Malta with the wider cultural landscape of the hill.
Behind the Famous Gate
The monumental gate seen by thousands of visitors is the entrance to the Magistral Villa of the Sovereign Order of Malta.
The complex is the historic seat of the Grand Priory of Rome and also houses the Order’s Embassy to the Italian Republic.
Because it remains a functioning institutional site, the interior is not an ordinary tourist attraction and access cannot be assumed as part of a daily itinerary.
When Can the Magistral Villa Be Visited?
Access to the Magistral Villa and Santa Maria in Aventino is subject to the official availability, permissions and institutional activities of the Order of Malta.
Selected opportunities for cultural visits may be made available, but the Villa is not operated as a conventional museum with unrestricted daily public access.
When an authorised opening coincides with your stay, we can design the private experience around that opportunity.
This experience should not be interpreted as a guaranteed private opening of the Magistral Villa. Access depends entirely on the conditions established by the institution. When interior access is unavailable, a complete private Aventine and Knights of Malta itinerary can still be arranged.
Piranesi’s Only Realised Architectural Work
The church within the Magistral Villa is one of the most unusual architectural works in Rome.
Giovanni Battista Piranesi, celebrated throughout Europe for his engravings of ancient and imaginary Rome, redesigned the church and the surrounding Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta during the eighteenth century.
The decorative language brings together military trophies, classical forms, symbols associated with the Order and Piranesi’s fascination with the ancient world.
It remains the only complete architectural project realised by Piranesi, making it particularly significant for visitors interested in architecture and the Grand Tour.
Piranesi’s Symbolic Interior
Inside the church, Piranesi transformed a relatively small sacred space through a highly personal decorative language.
Classical references, funerary motifs, military emblems and symbols connected with the Order of Malta coexist within an architectural composition unlike almost anything else in eighteenth-century Rome.
The Knights of Malta Keyhole
The entrance to the Villa is famous for one of Rome’s most celebrated visual surprises.
Looking through the keyhole, the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica appears framed by the greenery of the Villa’s garden.
The carefully composed view has become one of the most recognisable images of the Aventine and an elegant introduction to the extraordinary complex beyond the gate.
Santa Sabina
A short distance from the Priory stands the Basilica of Santa Sabina, one of the most important surviving early Christian churches in Rome.
Built in the fifth century, its restrained interior offers a radically different experience from the Baroque churches found elsewhere in the city.
Its celebrated wooden doors preserve some of the earliest surviving Christian carved scenes, adding another layer to the religious history of the Aventine.
The Orange Garden
The nearby Giardino degli Aranci offers one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in central Rome.
From the terrace, the city unfolds across the Tiber toward Trastevere, the historic centre and the dome of St. Peter’s.
It provides a natural conclusion to an itinerary that moves between institutions normally hidden from view, ancient churches and the landscape of Rome itself.
