For the Romans, the sky was not separate from human affairs.

The movements of the Sun, Moon and planets belonged to a cosmic order that could be observed, calculated and interpreted.

Astronomy, astrology, religion and political power existed far closer together in the ancient world than they do today.

Emperors consulted astrologers. Zodiac signs appeared on coins and artworks. Egyptian obelisks became instruments for measuring the Sun. Monumental architecture interacted with light, time and the celestial world.

Rome still preserves traces of this fascination with the heavens — sometimes in monuments visited by millions of people who never realise they are looking at them.

01 The Ancient Cosmos

What Was Roman Astrology?

Roman astrology studied relationships between celestial movements and events on Earth.

To many educated people in antiquity, the heavens formed part of an ordered universe governed by principles that human beings might attempt to understand.

Astrology therefore occupied a very different intellectual position from the one it holds in modern scientific culture.

Observation, mathematical calculation, philosophy, religion and prediction could overlap within the same understanding of the cosmos.

02 Knowledge Across Empires

Babylon, Egypt and Greece

Roman astrology did not begin in Rome.

It developed from centuries of accumulated knowledge circulating throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.

Babylonian traditions contributed sophisticated observations of celestial cycles. Egyptian culture possessed its own long relationship with astronomy, calendars and stellar observation. Greek scholars developed mathematical and philosophical frameworks for understanding the cosmos.

Rome absorbed these traditions into an empire in which ideas, texts, objects and specialists moved across enormous distances.

03 Planets & Zodiac

The Seven Classical Planets

Ancient celestial systems recognised seven moving heavenly bodies visible to the naked eye:

  • The Sun
  • The Moon
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn

These celestial bodies became associated with divine figures, qualities and cycles of time.

The twelve signs of the zodiac likewise became deeply embedded in ancient visual culture and astrological thought.

04 Emperor & Stars

Augustus and Capricorn

The first Roman emperor understood the political power of celestial imagery remarkably well.

Capricorn became closely associated with Augustus and appeared on Roman coins and other forms of imperial imagery.

The precise astrological reasoning behind Augustus' use of Capricorn has generated considerable scholarly discussion, but its political importance is unmistakable.

Celestial imagery could present imperial rule as something larger than ordinary politics — connected to destiny, cosmic order and the arrival of a new age.

Power Written in the Sky

For Augustus, the heavens could become part of imperial language.

Rome's monuments, calendars, solar instruments and celestial symbols reveal a culture in which political authority could be expressed not only through armies and architecture, but through time and the cosmos.

05 Campus Martius

Rome's Monumental Dialogue with the Sun

The northern Campus Martius under Augustus contained an extraordinary concentration of monuments connected with imperial identity, memory and the measurement of time.

The Ara Pacis, the Mausoleum of Augustus and the Egyptian obelisk used as a solar gnomon belonged to this monumental landscape.

Scholars continue to debate exactly how these monuments related to one another visually and symbolically.

What is certain is that Augustus transformed this part of Rome into one of the most ambitious monumental landscapes of the early Empire.

A landscape still debated

Reconstructions that present the entire Augustan Campus Martius as a perfectly unified astronomical masterplan should be treated with caution. The archaeological evidence is more complex — and more interesting — than a single geometric theory.

06 Measuring the Sun

The Horologium of Augustus

One of the most remarkable solar monuments of ancient Rome was created in the Campus Martius during the reign of Augustus.

An Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome was used as the gnomon of a monumental solar instrument.

Its shadow interacted with markings laid into the pavement, allowing the movement of the Sun through the year to be observed.

Archaeological remains of the meridian were discovered beneath the modern city.

The ancient obelisk itself survives as well: it now stands in Piazza di Montecitorio.

07 Architecture & Light

The Pantheon and the Sun

Few buildings demonstrate Rome's relationship with light more dramatically than the Pantheon.

Sunlight enters through the great oculus at the centre of the dome, creating a moving circle of illumination that travels across the interior as the Sun changes position.

Scholars have explored whether the building's solar effects carried calendrical, cosmological or imperial significance.

Not every interpretation can be demonstrated with certainty. What can be experienced directly, however, is extraordinary: architecture transforms the movement of the Sun into part of the building itself.

08 Time & Calendar

The Roman Calendar

Measuring the heavens was also a practical matter.

Agricultural cycles, religious festivals, political life and the organisation of the year all depended upon systems of time.

The Roman calendar changed repeatedly before the Julian reform created the foundation of the calendar system that ultimately shaped the one used across much of the world today.

Even the names September, October, November and December preserve traces of an earlier calendar structure: their names derive from the Latin numbers seven, eight, nine and ten.

09 Dangerous Predictions

Astrology and the Emperors

Roman rulers could be fascinated by astrologers — and frightened by them.

A horoscope predicting the death of an emperor or identifying his possible successor was not simply a private curiosity. It could become politically explosive.

Astrologers were therefore consulted, restricted and at times expelled from Rome.

The contradiction reveals the unusual power attributed to astrology: rulers might distrust astrologers precisely because they believed that their predictions could matter.

10 Mystery Religions

Mithraism and the Stars

Celestial imagery also appears prominently in interpretations of Mithraism, one of the most intriguing mystery cults of the Roman world.

The characteristic image of Mithras killing the bull is frequently surrounded by celestial imagery and zodiacal references.

Scholars have proposed different interpretations of the astronomical significance of these scenes, and many aspects of Mithraic belief remain debated.

What survives beneath Rome, however, demonstrates the importance of cosmic imagery within the visual world of the cult.

11 Egypt in Rome

Obelisks, Alexandria and the Roman Sky

Egypt occupied a special place within Rome's understanding of antiquity, religion and celestial knowledge.

After the conquest of Egypt, enormous obelisks were transported to Rome and placed within new imperial settings.

Their meanings changed in the process.

The obelisk used for Augustus' solar instrument is a striking example: an Egyptian monument became simultaneously an expression of conquest, imperial authority and the measurement of the Roman sky.

12 Papal Astronomy

From Ancient Rome to the Clementine Meridian

Rome's fascination with measuring the heavens did not disappear with the ancient world.

More than seventeen centuries after Augustus erected his solar instrument in the Campus Martius, another extraordinary astronomical instrument appeared inside a Roman monument.

In the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, Pope Clement XI commissioned Francesco Bianchini to create the great Clementine Meridian at the beginning of the eighteenth century.

Sunlight entering the basilica allowed precise astronomical observations to be made along a meridian line laid into the floor.

The location creates one of the most remarkable historical layers anywhere in Rome: an astronomical instrument of Papal Rome installed inside a Christian basilica built within the ancient Baths of Diocletian.

It belongs to a very different scientific and religious world from Roman astrology, but it provides a fascinating continuation of one of the city's oldest obsessions — understanding time by watching the sky.
